This illustrates that many people do drive as a side gig. I had one guy in his 60s pick me up in his Lexus ES. He was ret ired and doing well, but he drove Uber to get to meet different people.
We don’t like to talk about this drivers though, because it goes against Gordon’s ongoing crusade for the oppressed worker. *eye roll*.

New business idea: Shadetree.com, a “mechanic share”, where we match you up with person who claims to know how to work on cars. You make an appointment, take it to their house/after hours shop/walmart parking lot, they do the work and then give it back, all for way less than a licensed shop . And you can hope it doesn’t end up on just rolled into the shop next time it goes to a legitimate mechanic.

He’d have to drive Uber for three months to make the insurance and loan payment for one month. All this gig economy driving stuff for Amazon packages and Uber and the like, people use newish cars and the maintenance and dee-preesh are significantly higher than the peanuts they are being paid. I toy with the idea of delivering packages for Amazon, but I’d be using my ‘91 Corolla that has 235k miles. Newsflash: that thing wears out brakes and tires, too.
I rode in an Uber newish Corolla with CVT and the whole way, I was thinking, that CVT is going to be an expensive service at 30k miles.

Well he’d be driving for Uber Black presumably. But yeah, people who buy a new car for Uber are almost certainly making a mistake. Granted they may still be better off than the cabbies getting fucked over by a taxi company.

I mean...if that weren’t a potential legal nightmare I’d totally get behind something like that.

I used to be one of the people who defended Uber as a good idea, and a fairly hands off company. Seemed like a good concept. Then I found out the other day that they “fired” Ryan from “Ryan is Driving” suffice it to say I’m pissed.

So much for the strike. There are currently 8 active cars in the valley.

Uber, Lyft, etc are misunderstood companies. I don’t think they should be held accountable for their drivers ’ retirement, medical, or vacation expenses... But I also think that their fees should be significantly lower, and they should allow drivers to charge rates of their choosing .
Ideally, I think that if Uber wants to act like “the middle guy” ie: hands off, they would have to stop charging based on how many rides you handled, and instead charge a flat fee every month/year.
That way, full time drivers make more money, and Uber doesn’t have to deal with this. Of course, the laws on what qualifies as a contractor and what doesn’t would need to be checked... because Uber’s business would then have to depend on the flat fees from the drivers rather than the rides themselves. Uber would make a lot less money, but they would also be up to have a lot fewer expenses.

Had something to do with a policy change really. He makes a living doing Uber and making YouTube videos. Well Uber didn’t allow any in car cameras now apparently? Because screw accountability right? He always got permission before sharing it but that wasn’t enough. Also I we told him to take down his past videos and he declined. They didn’t want him as a driver anymore. It nuts because he was never negative about customers, the job, or the company.

I don’t know how much you know about British politics, but it reminds me of when far-right politician Jacob Rees-Mogg ran for election in one of the UK’s poorest areas, and went canvassing voters in a Bentley T Series back in the 90s.

The taxi thing was grim before Uber; can't imagine how it is now. Michael Cohen owned and shadily financed a number of NYC taxi medallions.

Too bad for him. Seems nothing wrong on what he is doing but he can’t do anything if his action falls under the company policy.
